Earthlink has a free, online spyware scan. If you have a slow net connection, don't bother.


Anti Virus/Worm

McAfee's multi-virus/worm scanner/removal tool: Stinger all-in-one scanner/cleaner for the latest 40 or so most common virii and worms - stand-alone program, no install.

GRI's Free AVG AntiVirus is one of the few free antivirus products left. [download]

AVAST! is another free anti virus [download]

Free Online Scanners:
TrendMicro - Trojan and Virus Check
WindowSecurity - Trojan and Virus Check
Sygate SOS - Not only will it scan for trojans, but also checks for port vulnerabilities exploited by trojans/viruses.


Network/Internet

The Firefox browser (a strippped-for-speed version of Mozilla)
lets you use tabbed browsing, will block pop-ups, and is immune to a lot of the IE specific mal-code out there.

If you don't want to switch from IE, try adding Foxie the addon for IE that will give you tabbed browsing and security to ignore pop-ups and many of the spyware infections that IE is prone to. [download]

NetPeeker is a great utility that monitors all network activity and breaks it down to individual process allowing you to cut off worms or set speed limits for programs or connections.[download]

System Utils

Cool Tools from Systernals:
Autoruns and Autorunsc lists everything loaded at boot-time. [download]
RootkitRevealer compares what is listed as running by the system with the start-up files to reveal programs that are attempting to hide themselves from view. (Some are legitimate, but others are malicious programs) [download]
Bluescreen Screen Saver a fun screen saver that emmulates the blue screen of death and even the following reboot [download]
PageDefrag allows you to defragment paging space and the registry hives which cannot normally be defragmented. [download]
Miscellaneous Tools is a various functions like displaying disk useage (du) forcing windows to write out any pending data (sync) and see which volumes reside on which physical drives and where.

SpaceMonger is a quick, free util to see where all your disk space went.

TUGZip is a free file archive compression/decompression tool. It works with every archive format I've heard of (zip, rar, gz, tgz, cab) and few I haven't (imp, yz1, 7-zip). [download here]

Like linux for somethings, but don't want to reboot all the time? I learning more about coLinux which runs natively on top of Windows 2000/XP ... it seems pretty sweet, but it's kindo isolated presently and doesn't let me access files on the MS partitions.


Misc

WorldTime is the little time syncronizer and timezone calculator that I use. It can be set to show as many or as few time zones as you like and just uses a tiny amount of screen space.

Picasa is a great, basic photo editing and index program from the google people that is free.

Inkscape is a free, open source vector graphics editor. As of August 2005, it's at version 0.42; so it's still being developed, but seems to have alot of the tools and options for freely placing text, pictures and geometric figures anywhere on the page.
